Phew! After a very busy spring Poppy Cottage Garden has opened again and sales of summer bulbs have finished. Any bulbs we have left will be potted up and sold from the Garden.

Our spring preparations were rather hampered by an unexpected 5″ of snow – twice! Not something that happens very often on the south coast of Cornwall. That followed a very wet winter, which continued after the snow, until this week. Today we had temperatures of 23 degrees outside the tearoom! As usual spring has gone from zero miles an hour to plants growing before our very eyes (we’re certain the polygonatum has grown at least an inch a day this week).

We will be stocking spring bulbs again from late August. Until then we have many plants and potted bulbs available to buy at Poppy Cottage Garden.

We are delighted to be able to offer a select few snowdrops from our collection.

Currently we have some ‘Mrs Macnamara‘ on offer, an early-flowering, robust snowdrop that usually flowers two weeks before Christmas for us.

Very shortly we will also be offering ‘Magnet’ and hopefully we may have others such as Galanthus woronowii and the yellow ‘Spindlestone Surprise’. Check back here throughout January for any further additions, follow us on Facebook where you will get the news straight away, or sign up to our email newsletter.

Work doesn’t stop here at Poppy Cottage Garden, home of The Flower Bulb Company. We are planning some new tulip displays for next spring and now that we have had our first frost they can be planted. Although we were surprised – we didn’t think we’d get much frost here!

We don’t go much in the way for an autumn tidy-up, preferring to leave it over the winter as food for birds, cover for wildlife and protection for some of the more tender plants (nothing gets lifted here). However we have a lot of trees to prune and bulbs to plant, as well as plants to pot up.

We are currently converting the large duck pond to a wildlife pond. Eventually we will replant the area surrounding the pond to be more wildlife-friendly too and introduce a couple more orchard trees. We’re afraid the ducks have gone, but to a good home close by. We still have the friendly little call ducks, the mandarin and a variety of unusual chickens.

We are introducing more of our bulbs to the beds and borders, carefully selecting those that will go with the current planting. Such as Ornithogalum nutans, camassias, lilies, Juno irises, Anemone blanda and some rather different alliums.

We had a very successful day at the Cornish Winter Fair on the 18th November. Our miniature daffodils were very popular, we didn’t have any to take home! Our potted Paperwhites were also popular. We met some lovely people and promoted Popy Cottage Garden to keen visitors.

So do now browse our range of spring bulbs, although some stocks are getting rather low. We’ve put some items on sale, they’ll need to be planted soon. What better excuse to get out in to the garden on a sparkling clear, chilly day!
